GETTING STARTED

Opening a database that is in another directory
If you want to access databases stored in a directory other than the Notes/Data directory, either on your hard drive or on a server, you can create a directory link to it, so you can open it using File - Database - Open.

To create a directory link

1. Create a new text file using a text editor, such as Notepad.

2. In the text file, enter the entire path of the database directory. For example, if your database is located locally on your hard drive you would enter C:\Databases\Other. If your database is located on a server, you would enter something such as \\Granite\Databases\Other.

3. Save the text file in your Notes\Data directory, for example C:\Lotus\Notes\Data. Give it a name that includes the extension DIR, for example Work.DIR.

To set access control for a directory link

If you have a database stored on a server, you may want to set access control for the DIR file, so only certain groups or people can access the link. If you set access control, anyone who has access to the server your database is on can see the directory, but only the groups or people listed in your DIR file can open it.

1. In the DIR file you created, enter the hierarchical names of the groups or people you want to give access to. For example, your DIR file can look like this:

2. Save the DIR file in your Notes\Data directory.

To open a database through a directory link

1. Choose File - Database - Open and navigate to the directory where you created the DIR file. The name of the DIR file you created should appear as a folder in the Database list field. For example, if you named your file Work.DIR, you would see Work as a folder.

2. Double-click the folder, select the database you want to open, and then click Open.
