GETTING CONNECTED

Additional Setup dialog box
When you set up a dialup modem, you can modify the following settings from the Additional Setup dialog box. These settings are for ordinary digital-analog modems, not cable or DSL modems.

Note By default, modem command files (.MDM) are stored in the \MODEMS subdirectory of your Notes data directory; for example, if you specified C:\NOTES\DATA as your data directory, your modem files are stored in C:\NOTES\DATA\MODEMS.

If the Additional Setup dialog box is not open, choose File - Preferences - User Preferences, click Ports, select a COM port, and click COMn Options.
OptionDescription
Modem typeIf your exact modem is not listed, select the closest match by brand and speed.

If there's no match and your modem is not 100% Hayes-compatible, you may need to edit an existing modem command file or create a new one. For information about your modem, see your modem documentation. For information about editing modem command files, see Lotus Domino Administrator 6 Help or your Domino administrator.

Select "Auto Configure" only temporarily, if you have no way of getting a modem command file immediately. This option, if it works with your modem, gives you limited, but slow, communication.

Maximum port speedYou can start with the maximum speed of your modem, but if you have trouble communicating at the selected maximum speed, select a lower speed. Notes selects a maximum data transmission speed based on the modem type you select. The maximum speed is limited by the modem command file's maximum speed and may also be limited by the operating system you're using.
Speaker volumeTo hear the modem so you can monitor call progress while attempting to call a server, select Low, Medium, or High. If you don't want to hear the modem, select Off.
Dial modeIf you're using a touch-tone phone, select Tone. If you're using a rotary phone or your modem doesn't support touch-tone dialing, select Pulse.
Log modem I/OIf you're having trouble establishing a connection, select "Log modem I/O" to record modem control strings and responses in the Miscellaneous Events view of your local Notes Log database. When the problem is fixed, make sure you deselect this option because it adds information to the Notes Log that takes up extra disk space.
Log script I/OIf you run an Acquire script or Connect script, select this option to see information about the script as it runs.

For more information on scripts, see Writing and editing acquire and login scripts if you have installed Lotus Domino Administrator 6 Help. Or, go to the Documentation Library on the Lotus Developer Domain to download or view Lotus Domino Administrator 6 Help.

Hardware flow controlHardware flow control between your modem and your computer prevents errors, such as CRC errors. Deselect this option only if you're using a modem or external serial port that you know doesn't support flow control; most modems and serial ports do support this feature.
Wait for dialtone before dialingThis setting is on by default, because most modems and phone systems can detect a dial tone and wait for it before dialing. If Notes can't detect a dial tone, try deselecting this setting and try dialing again.
Dial timeoutTo change how long your computer tries to connect to a server before it cancels the attempt, enter a number of seconds in the "Dial timeout" field. The default is 60.
Hangup if idleTo change how long your computer remains connected to a server when there is no activity (data transmission), enter a number of minutes. The default is 15.
Port numberEnter the number that corresponds to the port's operating system unit number; for example, 2 is the port number for COM 2.
Editing modem filesTo edit your modem command file, click "Modem File." For information about editing modem command files, see your Domino administrator.
Using script filesTo select or edit a script file, click "Acquire Script." For information about using script files, see your Domino administrator.
